Mine are in progress...I will definately have an alligator there but hopefully a ball python as well...I'm on spring break next week so that will be my time to finish up. BTW who is the reptile judge? It didn't say in the flyer...Art I'm guessing?
Jim, this is "The Ojibwa" from taxidermy.net...I got your email about this forum...I'll make an effort to post on here too...maybe a tutorial section would attract more people like on taxidermy.net

Hey all, just wondering. Ive been a taxidermist for 15 years here in southern Ohio (Lawence County). I'm new to the show scene. This year will be my first trip to any taxidermy competition in Berlin. I'm looking forward to seeing all of the competitors artwork. I wanted to put a piece in the show, but I wanted to see what I was up against first. Did many of you do this first before competing or am I just being a big baby worried about someone picking apart my mounts? My main concern is on the use of different mannikins. I mean there are quite a few different suppliers out there giving their idea of what a whitetail looks like. I mean a Dan Chase whitetail form looks different than a Mckenzie, Rineheart, Van Dykes etc. They all have different sculptors. When you enter a piece in a show, is the judge looking at what he thinks a deer looks like or is it just the detail that is put into the mount with symmetry and such? Is there a preffered mannikin for whitetails and other animals by competitors?

hptaxidermy, This will be my first competition in the OTA. I have been a member of the PTA for the last 2 years. This year, since I live in Lake Co. ohio, I will be attending / competing in the OTA. I will be bringing a couple of fish to compete with, in the Professional Div., A skin mount and custom Reprduction...I am looking forward to it ! Its a great way to Learn, see other competition mounts, and meet others in the State. Good Luck to All !

I wanted to put a piece in the show, but I wanted to see what I was up against first. Did many of you do this first before competing or am I just being a big baby worried about someone picking apart my mounts? I may have spoke to you before on taxidermy net but I will say it again. ANYONE who has gone the "wait and see" route will tell you it is a mistake. You will be wasting a year....BECAUSE if you wait and see you still won't know what YOU are doing incorrectly. If all you are doing is coming TO WIN then forget it. You will NOT win in your first try. Wether you enter now or wait and SEE. Forget being embarrassed. nobody cares but you. if your work is BAD there will be plenty of bad work there. If it's good you can only get better. Don't worry about using the wrong form. There WERE judges who basically wouldn't score others forms well BUT those guys ARE NOT USED anymore because they got bad reputations. None of the judges this year sell deer forms. Don't worry about someone picking apart your mount. It isn't like that at all. Bring something is my advice.
